Painting in the tradition of natural history illustration, I hope to build on the work of 19th-century artists such as landscape painter Thomas Moran and naturalist John James Audubon, who changed the way the American public viewed nature in an era of rapid industrialization and massive environmental change. These artists traveled extensively across North America and their field observations were critical to their art. My own art is rooted in field observation and like these early artist-naturalists, I have traveled by foot, boat, horse and bicycle to take my journal with me into the backcountry.
